Established in 1957, Valavadi Narayanasamy Cancer Center, the Oncology Department of GKNM Hospital has been one of the forerunners of Cancer Healthcare in South India. Well known in the region for its ethical Cancer Treatment and empathetic patient care, we offer the entire spectrum of holistic Cancer Care Treatment under one roof. Medicines, in addition to radiation therapy and surgery are an integral part of the multidisciplinary care of cancer patients. They play a vital role in curing or controlling the disease.


The specialists follow accepted standard guidelines in treating cancer patients as follows:

  • With close to 2 decades of experience, the Medical Oncology department provides preventive,curative and palliative care for patients with cancer.
  • Diagnostic workup and treatment of adult and paediatric solid tumours.
  • Treatment of cancers with the latest drugs including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biologic therapy, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy.
  • Modes of administration include intramuscular,intravenous, subcutaneous, intra-thecal, intra-peritoneal chemotherapy.
  • Daycare chemotherapy for the convenience of patients.
  • A seperate Pediatric Oncology ward for children with cancer.
  • Specialised care for neutropenic patients.
  • Therapeutic procedures including pleural and ascitic fluid drainage, intravesical chemo/immunotherapy and intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
  • Well experienced in use of chemoports, central lines and peripheral lines.

Radiotherapy is a major curative treatment modality and an integral part of cancer treatment. Nearly 60-70% of all cancer patients will require radiotherapy as a part of their treatment.

Facilities

The specialists follow accepted standard guidelines in treating cancer patients as follows:

  • State-of-the-art Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator for advanced external radiation treatments.
  • multichannel Nucletron microSelectron HDR brachytherapy for internal radiotherapy
  • Dedicated CT simulator.
  • The department utilizes latest & advanced radiotherapy techniques like RapidArc, IGRT/IMRT, SRS/SBRT, 3DCRT, Image guided brachytherapy which dramatically increases the safety of radiotherapy, reduces the side effects and improves control rates.

Medical Physics, an integral part of the department of Radiation Oncology comprises of a Chief Physicist / RSO and three Medical Physicists. Their primary work includes advanced radiation treatment planning for cancer patients, maintenance, quality assurance, commissioning and decommissioning of radiation equipments.

Surgical Oncology Department has team of experienced and qualified Surgical Oncologists for the management of cancer patients.

Their services are backed by skilled anaesthesiologists and post operative nursing care. Surgical oncology offers surgical procedures with least morbidity.

Following are few of them:

  • Sub total esophagectomy with two field dissection. Performed 250 cases so far.
  • Sphincter preserving rectal cancer surgery (Low / Ultra low anterior resection)
  • Breast conservation surgery with sentinel node biopsy to avoid lymphedma (swelling of upper limbs).
  • Minimal invasive procedures for colo-rectal and uterine cancer.
  • Laryngectomy and laryngo tracheal resections.
  • Major oral resections and reconstruction with micro vascular flap.
  • Major thyroid surgeries with tracheal reconstruction.
  • Genito urinary surgeries like radical / partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer, radical cystectomy with neo bladder reconstruction for urinary bladder cancer.
  • Limb salvage surgeries for soft tissue and bone sarcomas.
  • Penile cancer surgery with sentinel node dissection for Inguinal Nodes.
  • Staging laparatomy for cancer of uterus (Endometrium) and ovaries.
  • Wertheim’s hysterectomy for carcinoma cervix.

  • 8 bedded low count ward for management of neutropenic patients.
  • Stem cell unit includes a separate apheresis unit for collection of stem cell, stem cell storage with cryopreservation facility.
  • Unit includes 4 fully functional HEPA filtered beds.
  • We also offer Chemotherapy Day Care facility, comprehensive services for diagnosis and treatment of anaemia and other benign blood disorders.

The Division of Haematology treats people with blood disorders.

    • blood cancer including Acute leukemias, Multiple myeloma, CML, CLL, lymphomas etc, histiocytic disorders including LCH, HLH etc,
