    Coimbatore: GKNM Hospital has achieved an important milestone in advanced gastrointestinal care with the successful completion of 10 Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) procedures, including the treatment of large and complex colorectal lesions.

    ESD is an advanced therapeutic endoscopic technique that allows doctors to remove selected large, superficial gastrointestinal lesions in one piece through an endoscope, without the need for conventional open or major surgical procedures. The technique requires specialised expertise and meticulous dissection within the layers of the gastrointestinal wall.

    At GKNM Hospital, the procedures have included treatment of large colorectal polyps, including one large lesion with high-grade dysplasia, a significant precancerous change that carries a higher risk of progression to colorectal cancer.

    One of the most significant outcomes was in a patient with a large rectal lesion, where successful endoscopic removal helped avoid an abdominoperineal resection (APR). APR is a major colorectal operation that involves removal of the rectum and anus and usually results in a permanent colostomy. Avoiding such extensive surgery can have a major impact on a patient's quality of life.

In appropriately selected patients, it allows us to completely remove large and complex superficial lesions while preserving the organ and potentially avoiding major surgery.
