GKNM Hospital Hosts Workshop on Safe Surgical Practices and Innovations in Intestinal Surgeries

GKNM Hospital is always in search of medical education advancement by organizing a workshop entitled “Safe Surgical Practices & Innovations in Intestinal Surgeries.” The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the modernization and safety aspects of gastrointestinal (GI) surgeries. The workshop was held on 11th January 2026, at GKD Auditorium, GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore, under the leadership of Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy, CEO, GKNM Hospital.
The event would necessarily involve expert-led sessions and hands-on skill demonstrations designed to enhance the knowledge of surgeons, OT staff, and medical practitioners in GI surgery innovations.
The knowledge-sharing sessions started with Dr S. Vishnuvarthan, Consultant - General, Laparoscopic, and Robotic Surgeon, on introducing "Principles of Safe Surgical Practices in GI Surgery," with strategies for patient safety and surgical efficiency.
This was followed by Dr. Praveen Ravishankaran, Consultant - Surgical Oncology (Lap, Robotic, and HIPEC Surgeon), who provided "Laparoscopy and Robotics in GI Surgery," which discussed the application of robotic technology to obtain superior surgical outcomes.
"WHO Checklist on Infection Control and Asepsis in Theatres." This was the title of the significant presentation by Ms. S. Bhuvaneswari, OT in charge at GKNM Hospital, in which she described practical measures to reduce the chances of infection in surgeries.
Post-tea, there was an in-depth session conducted by Dr. N. P. Kamalesh, Chairperson of General Surgery. He spoke on the topic “Use of Suture/Staplers in GI Anastomosis,” while engaging video demonstrations showcased the latest devices and technological advances in GI surgery by the Medtronic Team.
Dr. R. Venkatesan, Consultant Surgical Oncology, would present on "Management of Perioperative Complications in GI Surgeries," and would be followed by the Ethicon Team with their topic entitled "Types of Suture and Suturing Techniques," which would further divulge to participants advanced suturing methods designed to improve patient outcomes.
The afternoon hands-on skill demonstration focused on Safe Instrument Handling, in which participants rotated through multiple stations, which included the following:
Station 1: Laparoscopy Instruments, GI;
Station 2: Robotic Instruments, GI;
Station 3: Advanced Devices, Staplers & Meshes, GI;
Station 4: Advanced Sutures, GI;
Station 5: Instruments Cleaning Techniques by the 3M Team.
Feedback, certificates distribution, and closing remarks rounded off the event, positively impacting participants with practical knowledge-updated skills, and innovative approaches to intestinal surgeries.
