Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging

Overview

The Department of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging at GKNM boasts a cutting-edge facility that provides a diverse array of nuclear medicine procedures catering to various medical specialties such as General |medicine, Paediatrics, Oncology, Cardiology, Surgery, and Neurology. This highly sophisticated branch of medicine utilizes radioactive isotopes for both diagnostic imaging and therapeutic interventions. The images produced through Nuclear Medicine deliver functional insights at the molecular and cellular levels, enabling precise disease diagnosis in both adults and children.

Diagnostic Scans

PET CT

PET CT is a sophisticated imaging technology that provides detailed, three-dimensional views of the body’s internal structures and metabolic activity. It involves injecting a small amount of radioactive material into the body, which emits positrons. The PET scanner detects these positrons, while the CT scanner captures detailed anatomical images. By merging the functional and structural information, PET-CT allows for more accurate and comprehensive diagnosis, particularly in oncology, neurology, and cardiology. The integration of PET and CT data enhances the precision of localization and characterization of abnormalities, contributing to improved patient management and treatment planning.

Gamma Camera

Gamma Camera:

The Gamma Camera stands as a crucial component in nuclear medicine, providing invaluable insights into the internal functioning of the human body. Introduced as a medical imaging device, the Gamma Camera captures gamma rays emitted by a radioactive tracer injected into the patient. This non-invasive technique allows medical professionals to visualize and analyze the distribution of the radioactive material within various organs and tissues. These devices provide detailed functional and quantitative images of the involved organs in patients.

We possess an advanced Siemens Symbia Evo Excel gamma camera equipped with a dual-head configuration.

Therapeutic Procedures

Unlike traditional therapies, nuclear medicine therapy directly addresses the underlying physiological or molecular processes within the body. One notable example is radioiodine therapy for thyroid conditions.

In this approach, a radioactive isotope is administered to the patient, either orally or intravenously, and selectively accumulates in the targeted tissues. The emitted radiation then works to destroy or modify the abnormal cells, such as cancerous or overactive thyroid cells. This tailored approach minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissues.

  • I-131 therapy for hyperthyroidism
  • I -131 therapy for thyroid cancer
  • Bone pain palliation Therapy using Phosphorus – 32, Strontium – 89, Samarium – 153.
  • I – 131 MIBG Therapy
  • Radiation Synovectomy
  • Lutetium 177 based therapies for prostrate cancer & neuroendocrine tumours

Non-Imaging Techniques

At GKNMH we have a Gamma probe to perform sentinel node procedures. We were the first hospital in Coimbatore to offer this cutting edge technology to our cancer patients. At present we are routinely doing sentinel node biopsy for early stage breast cancer, penile cancer, endometrial cancer, oral cancer and melanoma.
