Copper T, an IUD (intrauterine device), is a small T-shaped device inserted into the uterus by a trained healthcare provider.

It is a highly effective, non-hormonal birth control method that prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years by releasing copper that inhibits sperm and egg interaction.

It is one of the most effective forms of contraception, with a failure rate of less than 1%. They work immediately after insertion and can also be used as a form of emergency contraception if inserted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.

It is safe to use while breastfeeding.

After removal, fertility returns to previous levels immediately.

How it works:

1. The copper in the IUD makes the uterus an inhospitable environment for sperm, preventing them from reaching and fertilizing an egg.
2. It also changes the lining of the uterus and cervical mucus, making them less conducive to sperm survival.

Side Effects:

1. Bleeding: Some women may experience heavier, longer, or more painful periods, especially in the first few months after insertion.
2. Irregular Bleeding or Spotting: Spotting or irregular bleeding between periods is common, especially in the first few months.
3.  Cramping: Some women may experience cramping, especially during the first few days after insertion.

Other Possible Side Effects:

1. Increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) if you have an sexually transmitted infection (STI).
2. Rarely, the IUD may expel or move out of place.
3. In rare cases, the IUD can cause a small hole in the uterus during insertion, requiring surgery.
4. Very rarely, an infection can occur after insertion.
