Iron Deficiency Without Anaemia: Can You Be Iron Deficient Even When Your Blood Count Is Normal?

Sep 23, 2026

Iron is the most important for healthy blood counts. The reduced red blood cells are due to iron deficiency. Most of us do not realise we have an iron deficiency until it reaches the later stages, which is anaemia.

What are the signs of iron deficiency without anaemia?

The signs are quite similar to those of iron deficiency. To confirm whether the deficiency is with or without anaemia, doctors diagnose it with blood tests.

 The signs include:

  1. Lack of focus or concentration
  2. Feeling very tired or lethargic
  3. Changes in mood
  4. Feeling tired when engaging in a physical activity

Who is most likely to be diagnosed with iron deficiency?

  1. Lack of iron
  2. Less iron absorption
  3. When iron levels are required more

People who have a high chance of iron deficiency include

  1. People who are vegan/vegetarian
  2. Children who require more iron for growth and development
  3. Athletes
  4. A person who has internal bleeding due to injuries and surgery

How is iron deficiency diagnosed?

Blood tests are among the most accurate tests for diagnosing iron deficiency. The most common tests are ferritin and haemoglobin tests. When ferritin is low and the haemoglobin levels are typical, it is iron deficiency without anaemia. When the haemoglobin levels are also low, it is considered anaemia.

Treatment and Care

It is mostly treated with dietary options that are iron-inclusive. In extreme cases, such as anaemia, iron infusion is recommended. If you have any of the symptoms of iron deficiency, do not prolong it till the later stages. Consult a general physician nearby for treatment and care.
