Food Allergies vs Food Intolerance: What’s the Difference?

Oct 05, 2026

Food allergies and food intolerances are often misunderstood and can be confusing. The difference between food allergies and intolerances is that food allergies are caused by the immune system, and food intolerances are caused by the digestive system.

Why do they occur?

A food allergy is when the immune system mistakenly understands a food protein as a harmful invader in the body. Even a small amount of the offending food can cause life-threatening issues. On the other hand, food intolerance is when the digestive system is unable to break down the food consumed into smaller amounts.

Common food allergies include peanuts and tree nuts, milk, soy, fish, and shellfish. Common food intolerances include lactose intolerance (milk and milk products) and gluten (wheat).

What are the common symptoms of food intolerances and food allergies?

For food intolerances,

  1. Stomach pain/cramps
  2. Diarrhoea or constipation
  3. Nausea and vomiting
  4. Gastrointestinal issues such as bloating

For food allergies,

  1. Hives, itching
  2. Swelling of the mouth or lips
  3. Digestive troubles

Severe symptoms include

  1. Swollen throat, closing of the airways
  2. Difficulties in breathing
  3. Lightheadedness or dizziness
  4. Sudden drop in blood rate

What are some of the precautions you can take?

For food allergies, you can check the ingredients before consuming them. Avoid even a small trace of the offending food. As a precaution, you are advised to keep an EpiPen with you for life-threatening allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis.

Food intolerance does not mean you cannot eat it. You can consume it in smaller quantities or take dietary supplements such as Lactaid (lactose intolerance) before eating if you are highly sensitive.

Conclusion

For evaluation and to determine the cause of the allergic reactions and sensitivities, consult an Immunologist or Gastroenterologist for rapid immune reactions or digestive disorders.
