GKNM hospital was started as a maternity and child hospital. The department offers a comprehensive range of services in all pediatric subspecialities like Endocrinology, Pediatric surgery, Pulmonology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Developmental Neurology, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic surgery.
Since its inception in 1974, thousands of children have been treated for a wide array of complex pediatric conditions with results at par with international standards.

Treatments & Procedures

Pediatric Outpatient Unit

General pediatric outpatient department functions on all days and caters to children with a wide variety of illnesses and also has a well baby clinic for routine immunization. The well baby & immunization clinic functions daily from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM.

Paediatric Surgery

This service was started in 1974. Complex surgical conditions in newborn babies and children are performed with excellent results.

Paediatric Cardiology / Cardiothoracic services

Dedicated pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery programme was started in 2007. Since then our hospital have performed more than 3000 transcatheter interventions and more than 2500 open cardiac surgeries in children and adults with congenital heart diseases. Our average pediatric cardiology OPD is 275 cases per month. Our hospital is equipped with to perform transcatheter interventions and open heart surgeries in all ages, ranging from day one old child to adults.

We perform balloon aortic, pulmonary and mitral valvotomy in all children including newborns and also we do device closure of ASD, VSD and PDA regularly. Apart from the interventions for those common ailments, we do balloon dilatation and stenting of coarctation of aorta and pulmonary stenosis and device closure of uncommon ailments such as aortopulmonary window, device or coil closure of fistulas such as coronary AV fistula, pulmonary AV fistula, aortopulmonary collaterals and other rare fistulas.
We have structured foetal echocardiogram programme to identify the congenital heart diseases antenatally and follow those children till birth. Our neonatal intensive care unit is well equipped to deal those cardiac cases, including maintaining the ductus arteriosus by prostaglandins and performing emergency bedside atrial septostomy till such children are ready for definitive procedures.
Our hospital has regular academic sessions for postgraduates, nurses and other paramedical staffs as a part of our continuous medical education programme. We publish papers in the indexed journals regularly. One of the landmark paper published in Pediatric Cardiology journal was device closure of VSD using muscular VSD device through retrograde technique. Our center is first among to start doing device closure of sub pulmonic VSD in the world.

Paediatric Endocrinology

The department houses the largest Pediatric Endocrinology service in Coimbatore started by Prof. Raghupathy from CMC Vellore and now run by Dr. Ahila Ayyavoo. Neonatal screening program for hypothyroidism was started in 1st January 2006. Special awareness camps for type I Diabetes Mellitus patients, obese children’s and also for children with Disorders of Sexual Differentiation are held regularly.

Paediatric Pulmonology

We offer the following comprehensive diagnostic and treatment facilities.

Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia diagnostics – 1st center in South India
Cystic fibrosis diagnostics, including sweat testing
Pediatric flexible bronchoscopy
Primary immune deficiency and rare lung disease evaluation
Allergic testing including skin prick test
Lung function testing for children

Paediatric Neurology

Manned by 2 well trained, Neurologists. We offer both outpatient service and inpatient service for children with acute and chronic neurological problems. There is also a special Neuro developmental clinic for Ex NICU children and children with special needs. Multidisciplinary team includes speech therapist and physiotherapist.

Paediatric Gastroenterology

Got trained in the super speciality from hospitals in London and Manchester in the UK.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The NICU is the largest of its kind with 30 beds (12 of which are intensive care beds) was started in 1973. The NICU is the state-of-the-art facility to treat extreme preterm babies and is equipped with ventilators, warmers, photo therapy, incubators, infusion pumps and multiparameter monitors. NICU has got Level 1, Level lll and Isolation rooms.

Paediatric Intensive Care Unit

PICU which is 10 bed is equipped with ventilators, multiparameter monitors, dialysis, infusion pumps and syringe pumps to handle sick children with life threatening infections, Neurological emergencies, Hemato oncological emergencies, respiratory emergencies, trauma, post operative care etc. PICU is equipped with facilities to provide procedural sedation for invasive procedures like lumbar puncture, intrathecal chemotherapy, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, intercostal drainage, peritoneal dialysis catheter placement, central line and dialysis catheter placement etc. ECMO facility can be offered for patients with referral and support from pediatric cardiothoracic team. PICU is manned by paediatric intensivist and well trained PICU nurses and the team offers round the clock service.

Developmental Pediatrics

Special Neuro developmental clinic for Ex NICU children and children with special needs. Multidisciplinary team includes speech therapist and physiotherapist.
