Oncology Overview

In May 1952, G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital had come into existence as a fifty – bedded Hospital. The Hospital was inaugurated by his Highness the Maharaja of Mysore in the presence of Dr. Sir A. Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar, the doyen of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital for Women and Children.

In 1958, a Diagnostic X-ray machine was installed. Late Cavalier G. K. Devarajulu Naidu commissioned deep X-ray Unit and Radium needles for cancer patients. Valavadi Narayanaswamy Cancer Centre (VNCC) the specialized Oncology wing of G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital was born.

Over the years the transition from this humble beginning has been phenomenal and it is today regarded as a leading center offering cancer treatment at an affordable cost. GKNMH Oncology department has been recognised by the UICC as a Specialized Cancer Research and Treatment Centre. With over 5000 new cases being registered annually. It remains a leading tertiary referral centre in this part of the country. It caters to a large population of about 25 million drawn from Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Palani, Ooty and Karur Districts of Tamil Nadu and also the neighbouring states like Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. We also see, on occasions, patients from neighbouring countries like Srilanka, Malaysia, Singapore and middle east.

Recognitions

In 1993, VNCC was selected as one of the 4 hospitals for Screening in Coimbatore under its National Cancer Control Programme. VNCC was ranked among top 10 Cancer Centres in the Country by the Week (January 18,2004). It is eligible for Prime Minister’s Relief fund, Chief Minister’s Relief fund and eligible to issue free Travel concessions in Train / Bus.

On 02.05.2008, as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebration – Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam – His Excellency, the former President of India, inaugurated the following:

Welcome to Radiation Oncology department, one of the earliest in the city since 1958 till date, where cutting -edge technology meets compassionate care to provide advanced cancer treatments. Our dedicated team of oncologists, physicists, radiation therapists and support staff are committed to delivering personalized and effective treatment for our patients. Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Precise and targeted radiation delivery to maximize treatment effectiveness while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT-Rapidarc)

Fater and accurate treatment delivery enhancing precision and patient comfort.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Real time imaging technique to ensure accurate targeting of tumors during each treatment session.

Respiratory Motion Management (RPM)

Precise targeted radiotherapy for tumors which move with breathing. RPM-DIBH technique is regularly used in breast cancer to spare the heart from radiation.

Stereotactic RadioSurgery/ Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SRS/ SBRT)

High-dose radiation therapy delivered with pinpoint accuracy, particularly effective for small cancers, non-cancerous tumors and metastatic lesions.

Brachytherapy

Internal radiation therapy where radioactive source is placed directly into or near the tumor, allowing for precise treatment while minimizing exposure to normal tissues. We offer complex interstitial brachytherapy procedures for various cancers using advanced applicators.

Comprehensive Cancer Care

Collaborative approach and seamless co-ordination with other oncology specialties to provide holistic, integrated and evidence-based treatment plan.

Organ Specific Specialization

The speciality of Medical Oncology has seen phenomenal improvement in recent years with the introduction of new chemotherapy drugs, targeted therapies and immunotherapies. The Department of Medical Oncology plays a crucial role in cancer patients’ comprehensive care including prevention and treatment.

Pediatric Oncology

  • Eight-bed ward dedicated to treating children under 18 years with cancer.
  • Specialized care for Pediatric Patients, recognizing the unique challenges and requirements in treating Childhood Cancers.

Solid Tumor Oncology

  • Focuses on the treatment of solid tumors using a combination of Chemotherapy and Biological Therapies.
  • Addresses a wide range of solid tumor malignancies.
  • Comprehensive Care: Beyond medical interventions, we offer a holistic approach to cancer care. Our support services include nutritional guidance, emotional support, pain management, and access to clinical trials.
  • Survivorship Programs: Our survivorship programs focus on helping individuals regain and maintain optimal health, both physically and emotionally, post-cancer treatment.

Daycare Center

  • A dedicated 15-bed state-of-the-art daycare centre.
  • Patients receive chemotherapy without being admitted to the regular wards, allowing them to return home the same day after their chemotherapy sessions.
  • Approximately 30 patients are managed daily in the daycare facility.

Inpatient Chemotherapy Services

  • Around 6,000 patients are admitted annually for inpatient chemotherapy in the regular wards.
  • Expertise in managing patients using Central Venous Lines, long-term indwelling catheters, and chemotherapy ports.

Training Programs

  • Offers a three-year full-time Medical Oncology Super Specialty program.
  • Affiliated with the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi.
  • Provides comprehensive training for doctors aspiring to become medical oncologists.
  • Exposure to all specialities under one roof enhances the academic and practical learning experience.

Treatment Approaches

Specialization in the treatment of cancers using Chemotherapy and Biological Therapies, keeping abreast of advancements in the field, including the introduction of new Chemotherapy Drugs, targeted therapies, and Immunotherapies.

The combination of Outpatient Daycare Services, Inpatient Chemotherapy, and specialized training programs reflects our holistic approach to cancer care. The department’s focus on staying at the forefront of medical advancements ensures that patients receive the most effective and up-to-date treatments available.

Surgical Oncology

Surgical Oncology
  • We are in the era of organ preservation and minimum effective treatment in Oncology.
  • We are preserving routinely both breast and axilla in early and locally advanced breast cancer patients with sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and post NACT targeted axillary dissection.

Following are few of them:

  • We are planning to do Image guided surgery in Breast cancer patients using ICG, thereby improving the cosmetic as well as oncological outcomes
  • In colorectal cancer we are preserving sphincter by doing ultra LAR with TME after NACT RT regularly.
  • We are planning to have Robotic platform soon and preserve autonomic nerves in all our pelvic surgeries thereby decreasing bladder and sexual dysfunctions.
  • In head & neck cancer, we have performed more than 300 microvascular reconstructions for oral cancers with team effort of both onco and plastic surgeons.
  • In esophageal cancer our centre is one of the high volume centres in Tamilnadu performed more than 300 esophageal resections so far with the support of multidisciplinary team.

The Haemato-Oncology Unit offers state-of-the-art diagnoses and treatment of all cancers of the blood & bone marrow (leukemias, multiple myeloma) and lymphatic system (Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma). We have Flow Cytometry, Immuno phenotyping, Molecular Biology and Cytogenetics.
We also have separate wards for paediatric haemato oncology patients and patients with low counts. We have been doing Stem cell and Bone marrow transplants and have adequate facilities for Cryopreservation and storage of stem cells. Apart from haematological malignancies, we also manage patients with non-cancerous haematological conditions like Thalassemia, Myelo-Dysplastic Syndrome, Aplastic anaemia
etc.

Multi Disciplinary Teams were formed since 14.02.2009 and we have Head and Neck, G.I., Breast, Gynaec, Haematology and Palliative Care Units. Everyday at 3.00 p.m., 6 days a week all new registrations in our department are discussed jointly in the presence of all our Oncology Consultants, Oncopathologist, Radiologist and other consultants.

Non – Clinical Divisions: Medical Physics, Bio- Medical Engineering. Patient support services: Raksha – The Hospice (Terminal Cancer Centre) Pain and Palliative Care Unit / Hospice inaugurated In 2001, Sengadu – Free Dormitory.Academic: We have Nursing Oncology programme since 2002. Many Nurses has passed out and are placed in India and abroad.

We were part of INDOX Cancer network. (Indian Oxford Cancer Network). The clinical research department is started in the year 2008 for oncology clinical trial. More than 30 oncology clinical trials including both International and Indian studies have been conducted in oncology clinical trial department. The purpose of clinical trials is to find ways to more effectively prevent, diagnose, or treat disease. Every drug and procedure that is used in cancer treatment was
studied as a part of a clinical trial.
